This is Russia's Vietnam

Especially from the point of view of the Russian people, the Russian war on Ukraine is Russia's Vietnam.  It is a war of outsiders against people defending their homes, based on lies by their President and their country's leaders.  Now with the apparent equivalent of the draft, that war comes home, as Vietnam did in the U.S.

I feel for the young men of Russia (I believe only males are being called up.)  The photo above apparently is of young men trying to escape the country, as so many Americans did to Canada and elsewhere.  The New York Times had a front page photo of young men who had been drafted and were on their way to war.  I've seen the look in those eyes before.

The tragedy of war knows no boundaries, especially now.  Ukraine is suffering, Russian people suffer, the entire interconnected world and all life on the planet suffers because of this war.  But these echoes of the Vietnam war are haunting.
