My mom was rocking me quietly in a rocking chair, watching TV, when the announcement came. Everyone who was alive then still remembers the exact moment when they heard the news. It broke so many hearts.
We were in the hallway during HS lunch hour when the news was broadcast over the intercom. First a loud hush overtook the noisy teenage crowd and then quiet buzzing as we returned to class. It was my 16th birthday. I've now lived 45 birthdays with the ghost of that day.
