Monumental

Late last week President Obama designated several new National Monuments.  Most have been proposed earlier and in the works for awhile--but now it's finally happened: three sites in Humboldt County are among them, including my beloved Trinidad Head.

The other two Humboldt sites are Waluplh-Lighthouse Ranch and around 400 acres of Lost Coast Headlands.  These are all technically part of the already established California Coastal National Monument, and are all on federal land.

This designation will add a further layer of legal protection from development etc. for the Head, the place I hike more frequently than anywhere else.  I love this place, and it's a rare thrill for its unique beauty as well as historical significance, especially to Native peoples, to be so permanently recognized.  Thank you, Mr. President.
